Day 1 Inle Lake - Loikaw
You leave Inle Lake, Shan State, to travel by boat and car to the little-visited Kayah State. Much of this area is unfortunately still forbidden to foreigners, but the region around the capital of the State, Loikaw, has recently been opened to travelers. The journey from Inle Lake to Loikaw is an experience in itself. First, you sail on Inle Lake and enjoy the enchanting scenery and the floating markets. You will go to the less touristic areas of the lake where you will pass several villages, beautiful scenery and vistas, and barely-visited monasteries and temple complexes along the narrow canal. You'll also visit the Thar Khaung Pagoda in Samkhar. The landscape of Samkar is unique and unusual. You will be amazed to see the ancient stupas, some of which are lying on the water, others engulfed by plants. The boat trip takes about five hours to the village Hpekhon. From Hpekhon you continue by car to Loikaw.
Day 2 Loikaw
Today you can visit the town of Loikaw and the surrounding area, including villages like Waricalku or Sunboon where the Padaung people live.

In the morning you start with a visit to the regional market where it is definitely worth spending an hour walking around. Then you will go in search of the villages of the Padaung. The women of the Padaung are also known as the "long neck" or "giraffe" women, a name which refers to the heavy necklaces they wear from an early age that slowly stretch their necks further and further. Many Padaung have fled to northern Thailand where they now live and earn their money by posing for tourists. The area around Loikaw is their original homeland.
Day 3 Loikaw - Kalaw
Today you take the public bus drive to the town of Kalaw, located at 1300 meters' elevation. The bus normally leaves around 7:30 and arrives around 13:00. The British founded this city as a hill station and you will see there are many British colonial houses. Kalaw has a small but vibrant market which takes place once every five days. The market comes to life with the many Palaung and Pa'o who visit from surrounding areas. There is also a large Indian community in Kalaw and you can also visit a Hindu and Sikh temple.
Day 4 Kalaw
Today is a free day in Kalaw. The fresh, hilly area around Kalaw invites hikes. You can take a short walk around the town, or choose one of our walking tours. In addition, you will visit some Palaung and Pa'o villages.
Day 5 departure Kalaw
